Fremantle defender Michael Johnson says he was shocked when he found out he would face 10 weeks on the sidelines with a serious hamstring injury earlier this season.
Johnson has played two games since returning from a torn hamstring he suffered in his 200th game against Richmond in round 10.
The initial shock of the injury made way for determination for Johnson, who wanted to get his body right for the end of the season, after he missed last year’s finals series due to a back injury.
“I’ve never done a hamstring before,” he said.
“I only found out the day after when I got a scan that I had a tendon injury with it as well.
“I was a bit shocked but I didn’t let it get to me.
“I just wanted to play for Fremantle again this year.”
Missing out in playing in September last year was a reminder for Johnson to put his head down and get his body back in good health.
“It was tough watching the boys in the finals last year going out in straight sets, knowing you could make an impact,” he said.
“It wasn’t ideal but if I had to pick a time of year, it came at the right time.”
Johnson said his body felt much better after the Kangaroos game.
He was back to his trademark side steps and penetrating kicks insinde-50.
“The first game back was a big game in the derby, I just wanted to get out there and get moving,” he said.
“I felt a lot better against the Kangaroos.
“It’s another step in the right direction for myself, leading into a busy time of year.
“We’re happy with my body how it is going, that’s myself, fitness staff, physio and doctors.”
