Fremantle’s first draft pick Darcy Tucker says it will be surreal to train alongside club stars such as Matthew Pavlich and Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe.

Tucker, from North Ballarat, was taken at pick 27 in Tuesday’s NAB AFL Draft in Adelaide.

“I’ve watched Fyfe win the Brownlow and Pavlich, a champion of the club and the league,” he told fremantlefc.com.au.

“It’ll be quite surreal turning up to the club and seeing those blokes.

“I’m really looking forward to working closely with players like that.”

Tucker said tonight was the realisation of a dream of making an AFL list.

He was watching the draft in Horsham with family and friends.

“It was a massive shock when my name was read out, it’s hard to describe the feeling,” he said.

“My name popped up and it was exciting.

“My family and friends were really happy that my dream has come true.

“There was a lot of excitement to be picked up by an impressive club such as the Fremantle Dockers.

Pick 27 - Darcy Tucker

“It’ll be a big move over to Perth, but playing AFL is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Tucker was named in the under-18 All Australian team in 2014, before he suffered a serious ankle injury.

“My ankle injury did set me back coming into this year but my body is all fine now and I’m feeling really good,” he said.

Fremantle general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said Fremantle was delighted Tucker was still available when the club’s first pick arrived.

“We really like Darcy as a player and as a person,” Lloyd said.

“We think he will add some running capacity off half-back and he ran very strongly in testing.”
