David Mundy’s final minute goal against Richmond at the MCG in round 17 will be remembered by Freo fans for years to come.

However, Mundy, who slotted the 50m set shot to seal the win, said the real hero was Garrick Ibbotson.

With Richmond two points in front, Tommy Sheridan had a tough set shot, which drifted wide for a point.

Tigers defender Bachar Houli took the pressure kick-in. He launched the footy into the centre square.

Enter Ibbotson.

“The hardest part of the whole play was Ibbotson’s mark,” Mundy said.

“He won the ball then kicked it to me.

“I just had to kick the goal.”

Mundy said nerves did not play a part in his shot.

“We put ourselves in those kinds of conditions in training,” he said.

“Once you’re in that position, your routine just takes over.

“It was pretty simple.”

Ibbotson said he felt nervous for Mundy as he lined up.

“I was standing right behind him when he kicked,” Ibbotson said.

“It was an unbelievable shot.

“I was feeling for him because of that set shot after the siren in Geelong last year which just missed.

The joy after the goal and as the siren sounded was plastered across the Fremantle players’ faces.

“Wins on the road are really special, especially against a team like Richmond, who were really charging this year,” Mundy said.

“Those kinds of wins are special.”
