Lloyd Meek is set to fly in 2020 with the emerging ruckman pushing to be available for selection early in 2020.
Meek is yet to debut as he commences his third AFL season. His training loads increased this week, joining the main group for select drills after recovering from a leg injury.
His 2019 season-ending injury came as he was playing a career-best game for Peel with 36 hitouts, two goals and 20 disposals before coming off late in the fourth quarter against Swan Districts.
Senior coach Justin Longmuir said he was eager to see what Meek can do in Freo colours.
“I’m really keen to get minutes into him,” Longmuir said on 6PR’s Sportsday.
“Unfortunately for Lloyd, he had a stress fracture in his foot at the end of last year so he’s missed a fair bit of training.
We’re just starting to see what he can produce at the moment.
“He’s back into full training, we’ll look to get minutes into him next week, so that’s exciting.
“Lloyd’s building and we’ve got big expectations for him.”
Longmuir said having ruck depth would mean Freo’s tall forwards can stay in attack.
“We are a little bit light on in the ruck department and we’re pretty keen to play Rory Lobb forward with Matt Taberner,” Longmuir said.
“They’ve done a lot of work in our forward structure over the pre-season and they’ve been working really well together.
“They’re providing a good target for us and also providing a good option for our smalls to get to the feet of.”
