Senior coach Justin Longmuir feels confident in the depth of Fremantle’s midfield, with a number of players competing for the two vacant wing roles left open by departed midfielders Bradley Hill and Ed Langdon.
Longmuir spoke of his desire to see Cerra play as a full time midfielder instead of primarily as a half-back during the past two seasons, praising the 20-year-old's ability to play both on the inside and outside.
He believed the no.5 pick from the 2017 NAB National Draft is capable of competing for the wing roles alongside the likes of Brett Bewley and new recruits Blake Acres and James Aish.
Cerra has been backed to play the role, named on the wing for Freo’s first Marsh Community Series game against Carlton on Saturday.
“I really want to settle Adam down (in the midfield),” Longmuir told 6PR’s Sportsday.
“I feel with a young team, you’ve got to nail your position before you can get moved around (in other positions).
“The onus will be on him to nail a midfield spot and we’ll give him plenty of opportunity.
“He has the flexibility to go to the wing and he plays that really well as well. That will be his role at the moment we’re trying to give players a real clear focus leaning into games.”
Longmuir was full of praise for Bewley, Acres and Aish after strong pre-seasons from the trio.
“I don’t think Aish and Acres have missed a session since they’ve been here,” Longmuir said.
“They’ve fitted in really well to our group, to the extent that they both got votes in our leadership vote.
“They’ll share that wing role with Brett Bewley, who’s probably been the standout of our pre-season.
“He came back in super nick, he’s really fit and had invested in his footy in all areas.
“A lot has been said about what we lost on the wings in the last year, but we feel like the people that we’ve got into the footy club and recruited from within, we’ll be able to fill those roles.”
