There was magic in the air at Crown’s Grand Ballroom on Wednesday night for the Fremantle Dockers’ annual Gala Auction.

Hundreds of items were bid on in the silent auction, including a One Direction piece, which caught the attention of Freo’s Tom Sheridan and Craig Moller.

Stephen Hill’s name popped up on the interactive auction big screen with a bid for a signed Kelly Slater, the world’s greatest ever surfer.

‘Hilly’ won the item, but in a display of kindness he gave it up to a lady who had wanted it for her son.

So amazed was she by the speedy midfielder’s generosity, she assured him she’d now be switching camps from West Coast to Fremantle.

Well done on winning over another supporter ‘Hilly’.

Assistant Peter Sumich also had the credit card busy, although ‘Suma’ wasn’t so keen on the sporting memorabilia. He ensured his family would be well fed for the next few days by filling his fridge with king prawns.

Elsewhere, Alex Silvagni and Peter Faulks were intrigued by the famous Gallipoli Anzac photo, which features hundreds of diggers posing in a group photo.

Magician Phil Cass entertained the crowd throughout the evening.

In between the magic show and main course, a number of great main auction items were bid on and won, including a Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix package and a backyard cricket game with Tendai Mzungu and Chris Mayne.

The proceeds of the sales from the Gala Auction go towards Fremantle’s Community Goals program, which captain Matthew Pavlich said was among the best in the AFL.

“We’re seeing and administering playing clinics to 125,000 students throughout the year, so it’s a fantastic initiative for the schools, but also for the footy club,” he said.

“Our Community Goals program is highly regarded within the AFL as the best program that’s delivered in that space.”

Fremantle’s players will spend an average of 80 hours each this season visiting schools and junior football clubs.

“It’s a part of being an AFL player and the guys really take their role in the community seriously,” Pavlich added.
