Five Talking Points from round 17 v GWS
'Pav' looms on Coleman, oh so close to a number of records, inaccuracy, 'Son Son' magic and why Mundy was subbed
Another seven goals for the goal-kicking juggernaut that is Matthew Pavlich. That brings the captain’s tally to 31 in six weeks, which vaults him right into Coleman Medal contention. He now has 45 for the season - just six behind leader Lance Franklin who looks likely to miss another game this weekend. It was the first time in Pavlich’s career that he’d kicked seven, having booted bags of nine (once in 2005 v Carlton at the MCG) and eight (2008 v North Melbourne at Subiaco and 2005 v Adelaide at Football Park) in the past.

Records tumble, almost
Sunday’s 95-point victory was Fremantle’s third-greatest ever winning margin, behind the 112-point win over Collingwood at Subiaco in 2005 and the 97-point victory over Essendon at Subiaco in 1997. It was also the fourth fewest points Freo has ever conceded in a game, with the 33 allowed against Sydney at the WACA in 1997 the best. After a four-goal opening term, it seemed Matthew Pavlich was also on track to threaten Tony Modra’s 10 goals for most in a game by a Freo Docker.
Mundy Subbed for Sutcliffe
It’s not often a team substitutes one of its best midfielders, but that’s what happened to Dave Mundy in the third quarter. As it turns out, Ross Lyon revealed after the game that the 2010 Doig Medallist was just a bit tight in the hip flexor and had endured a bout of gastro during the week. Subbing him out was just erring on the side of caution. Mundy’s replacement Cam Sutcliffe again showed a liking for leather, gathering 10 possessions in the quarter-and-a-bit he was on the ground. The 20-year-old now has a perfect 3-0 win-loss record as a Freo Docker.
What could have been
Up 35 at quarter time, Freo entered its forward 50 on 16 occasions in the second quarter and scored 15 times. Unfortunately, wayward kicking at goal saw the team register a woeful 2.13. If the kicking boots had been on, the lead could have been near 100 at half-time. The main culprits were Kepler Bradley (1.4), Hayden Ballantyne (1.3) and Tendai Mzungu (0.3).

Here comes the ‘Son Son’
Freo fans could get used to the sight of Michael Walters kicking brilliant goals. That’s exactly what the exciting small forward has done in his first two games back. Hopefully he can keep it up and continue being a regular on the highlight reel.
