Never about percentage: Johnson
Michael Johnson says it would have been foolish of Freo to disrespect GWS by focussing on a percentage boost
The defender, who is having one of the best seasons of his career, said the only points Freo spoke about during the week were the four points for winning the match against the young Giants.
“We didn’t focus on the score or percentage at all,” he said.
“If we put our guard down, GWS was talented enough to kick a few goals or even get close to winning.”
Johnson said Freo’s only aim was to replicate on the field the way the players had trained all week.
“It doesn’t matter who we play, we go out there and play the way we want to play,” he said.
“If we get the four points, it’s a bonus. We played the way we’ve been training and we got the four points.
”
Johnson said the defensive group was pleased to hold an AFL side goal-less in a half, but he credited the work up the ground for making that possible.
“The pressure that the forwards and the midfielders put on makes it a lot easier,” he said.
“But it’s been great down there. We work hard to stop teams getting a run-on and getting a score on us.”
Johnson admitted the defenders were disappointed to allow GWS to kick five goals in the second half, including four in the third quarter.
“They had players getting behind our last few defenders and we got caught out a little bit,” he said.
“There were a few 50m penalties and we let them take easy marks inside 50 and play the way they wanted to play.”
