It was a goal against Geelong in a high-pressure final in 2013 that Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon says typifies Matthew Pavlich’s skill.
Fremantle had to travel to Geelong’s fortress of Simonds Stadium to play a Qualifying Final against the three-time premiers.
Against all the odds Fremantle pulled off a famous 15-point win, with Pavlich instrumental, kicking two goals.
Pavlich testimonial not a farewell
Speaking at Pavlich’s testimonial dinner presented by Channel Seven at Crown Perth on Friday, Lyon said one of the captain’s goals against the Cats was a classic example of his abilities.
“The final down at Geelong…we didn’t start that well,” he said.
“It was into the wind, Matthew against three brought it to ground.
“It was a classic Matthew Pavlich goal, swerve one way, swerve the other…then the snap the goal and it was just exquisite.
“He has done that time and time again.”
I'm not satisfied yet: Pavlich
Lyon said Pavlich was a pleasure to coach and led the group by his actions and demanding effort.
“He was the first to run with the message,” he said.
“You need to lead by more than just action.
“You have to hold people to account, you need to push and have strong emotional intelligence.
“When people are under pressure they’re hungry to be led, they’re critical moments, when we’ve been under pressure Matthew has stood up and led.”
Lyon said one of Pavlich’s greatest qualities was in his meticulous preparation.
“You can’t be the player he is without being a great preparer and having great character,” he said.
“He delivers on all those in spades.”
