Michael Walters became Fremantle’s leading goal scorer for 2015 with a bag of four against Collingwood on Thursday night.

Walters was instrumental in helping get Freo across the line in the nail-biting seven-point win at Domain Stadium.

He took his season tally to 22 goals from 12 games.

Walters said his goals were thanks to some fantastic work by the midfield.

Hill happy but room to improve

“It’s always good to get a few goals on the board but it comes from the hard work in the midfield,” he said.

“It was lucky for Ballas (Hayden Ballantyne) and I to get the ground level ball and have a few potshots on goal.

“We always knew the talls would get it to ground level so we had to make sure we led and loop, come back in and get the crumb.”

De Boer's reward for work

Walters said senior coach Ross Lyon had spoken to the players post-game about focusing on the basics.

“As Ross said in the meeting, the boys were a bit sloppy early,” he said.

“We wanted to stick to the basics and make sure we worked our way back into it in the second half.”
