Named as an emergency for Freo’s clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, defender Ryan Nyhuis started the day expecting to watch the clash from the sidelines.

Instead, Nyhuis’ day ended with the 20-year-old making his debut in Fremantle’s forward line, kicking four goals – including the match-winner – in Fremantle’s four-point victory.

Nyhuis was crucial kicking a goal in each of the opening two terms and another two in the last. His third goal was a spectacular effort on the run from outside 50. His fourth sealed the win for Fremantle, taking an impressive contested mark and converting from 45m.

Talking on Fox Footy post-game, a delighted Nyhuis said his role on debut was completely unexpected.

“It’s unreal, it’s the first time I’ve played forward in my life, basically,” Nyhuis said.

“I feel like (I could play forward) now. It’s good but it was a bit of a curveball.”

Coming in for David Mundy (illness), Nyhuis’ role for the day was playing as a defensive forward, tasked with limiting the impact of North defender Robbie Tarrant.

“Dave went out sick this morning, I got the word that I was in the team,” Nyhuis said.
