Lachie Weller moved all over the country before being drafted by Fremantle in 2014, but Freo’s most recent Rising Star nominee said having other interstate youngsters by his side at the club has been greatly beneficial.
Originally from Tasmania, Weller moved to the Gold Coast when he was 15, and credited the camaraderie at the club for helping him settle in yet another move across the country.
“All the young boys, especially coming (from) interstate), we basically only had each other at the club so we hung out at lot,” Weller said.
“The culture’s been good since I’ve been here so we’re always beside each other, helping each other out and it’s good to share those experiences.”

The young speedster is coming off his best game in his 15 game career with 22 touches, four goals and an AFL Rising Star nomination against Brisbane, and said there’d been added benefits to playing every game so far in 2016.
“It’s like anything, the more you do it the better you get,” he said.
“It’s (also) been good this year because we travel every second week so I see my parents a lot, so I’m really enjoying that.”
Weller’s brother Maverick was originally drafted to the Gold Coast Suns and has been at St Kilda since the end of 2013, and the Freo youngster said seeking his older sibling’s advice has also contributed to his growth as a player.
“He’s (Maverick) been really good, I speak with him a lot and he’s always there for advice,” he said.
“He’s been there and done it so we chat and we’re happy for each other to do well.”
