The brand of football Fremantle played against Gold Coast was “too difficult to sustain”, according to forward Michael Walters.
Speaking after his team’s 24-point loss to the Suns, Walters said Freo was too impatient with its ball use.
“We came up here to improve and tried to play a four quarter effort, but at the end of the day, we only played two quarters,” he said.
“At times we needed to build the ball, which we did well in the first half.”
“The second half was just hard.
“We kept on trying to play the run-and-gun, which we couldn’t sustain.
“It was really frustrating.”
Yarran excited by debut
Of his own game – the 25-year-old amassed 24 possessions and four goals on Saturday – Walters said he was working hard on becoming more versatile.
“I try and go wherever Ross puts me,” he said.
“Just like everyone else, I’m trying to improve and I’m trying to get my game to the next level.”
“If that’s to go in the midfield, I work my butt off trying to improve there.”
“If I can go up forward as well and kick a few, like I did today, then that’s always a bonus as well.”
Walters also praised the efforts of debutant Shane Yarran, with whom he shared a street during his childhood.
“I thought it was a really good debut,” he said.
“He kicked two goals and he could’ve kicked a few more if he marked the footy, but those things will come.”
“I thought he worked into the game pretty well and I thought he tried his butt off.”
