Tag one, respect all: Lyon
Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has indicated Ryan Crowley is no certainty to play on Brownlow Medallist Jobe Watson on Friday
The reigning Brownlow Medallist, Watson has made a blistering start to 2013, with two possible best-on-ground efforts in the first two games.
Lyon said Freo would respect all Essendon’s midfielders, but he was likely to tag just one.
That wouldn’t necessarily be Watson.
“Traditionally we haven’t gone to Jobe, but he is a much improved player and their leader,” Lyon said on 6PR.
“We have some big-bodied mids that we feel can match Jobe, like (David) Mundy, (Michael) Barlow, (Nat) Fyfe and Crowley is big as well.”
Lyon said Freo had to be mindful that Watson wasn’t the only Essendon midfielder in top form this season.
Proven performers Brent Stanton and David Zaharakis have been excellent, while Ben Howlett is enjoying a breakout season.
And Lyon knows all too well how much influence former St Kilda star Brendon Goddard can wield with his sublime skills.
Add third-year player Dyson Heppell, who has been tremendous in his new midfield role, and the Bombers’ roll deep in the midfield.
“It’s not about one player,” Lyon said.
“I think if you concentrate too much on one player you can lose sight of it all.
“They are playing good football, so it’s a massive challenge.”
