Fremantle forward Kirby Bentley has been placed on the long-term injury list, ruling her out of the 2018 AFLW season.

The club will be allowed to add a replacement player to the main list prior to the NAB AFLW Rookie Draft.

Bentley underwent surgery after injuring her right knee while playing in the AFLW State of Origin match on Saturday 2 September at Etihad Stadium.

The 31-year-old played every game in the inaugural 2017 AFLW season and was selected in the initial 40-player All-Australian squad.

Fremantle Dockers AFLW Manager Wade Spilcker said Bentley will be an invaluable asset for the club off the field. 

“Kirby will continue to be involved with the playing group as she continues with her rehab,” Spilcker said.

“We’re keen to work with her in a match-day or training role that will utilise her leadership and experience."

Bentley's work in the community with Indigenous girls through the Kirby Bentley Cup was recognised when she became the first female finalist for the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award in 2017.
