Peel Thunder have won consecutive games for the first time this season after a tight three-point victory over West Perth at Rushton Park.
The Thunder capitalised on a strong start to lead for the entire game, holding off a late Falcons surge to finish 11.11 (77) to 11.8 (84).
Fremantle defender Ethan Hughes said the Thunder’s decision to change their ball movement helped them late in the game.
“We switched it around a lot and we didn’t go down the line, in previous weeks it sort of cost us a little bit,” he said.
Peel’s hot start was negated in the second term as West Perth hit back with four goals to the Thunder’s one.
Hughes said coach Cam Shepherd reinforced the teams original game plan at half time.
“We just [needed] to stick to the game plan, we knew what they wanted to do, and we know what we could do to beat them, so if we stick to that we’ll be right,” he said.
Peel extended their lead in the third term kicking three goals including a major from Fremantle’s Cam McCarthy.
Hughes said McCarthy’s ball intelligence was felt among the team.
“Cam has come back with a really good attitude, he kicked a couple of goals, it’s good for him to get a bit of confidence up,” he said.
The Thunder scored another three goals in their final term to hold on for their fourth win of the season.
Fremantle ruckman Lloyd Meek scored two goals and finished with 26 hit outs.
Luke Strnadica also had an impact with 15 disposals and 34 hit outs.
Peel Thunder will face South Fremantle next Saturday 16 June at Fremantle Oval at 2.15pm.
