Danyle Pearce has lauded Fremantle’s team effort to come within a straight kick of equaling the AFL record for most individual goal kickers in a game, which stands at 16.

Fifteen Freo players kicked a major in the 113-point thumping of GWS at Patersons Stadium.

With the club one goal away from tying the record in the final term, Fox Footy’s commentators identified Pearce as the most likely candidate to kick the goal.

“Believe me I was trying, I was sniffing around everywhere,” Pearce joked after the game.

But record or no record, the former Port Adelaide star said the even spread of goal kickers was incredibly pleasing.

“It was a great team effort, it really was, and that’s what we want,” Pearce said.

“We’ve been a strong side all year, no matter who’s playing or who’s in or who’s out.”

Pearce said the only blip on Fremantle’s performance was a second-quarter flat spot that allowed the Giants to kick five goals in a row and get back in the game.

A half-time talk from disappointed senior coach Ross Lyon realigned the side’s focus.

“I’m sure the whole stadium knew he wouldn’t have been pleased,” Pearce said.

“We thought we really slipped and let them get a bit of a sniff in the game.

“But we’ve got a strong leadership group and we’ve been harsh on ourselves all year.

“We knew straight away that it wasn’t good enough and that we had to turn it around, and the second half was good.”
