First year rookie Lisa Webb is “stoked” to play her first AFL game in the NAB AFL Women’s round two clash against Collingwood at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
Webb will be making her debut at the big stadium in front of more than 40,000 Freo fans.
“I’ve done everything I can to get a game, but obviously we have a very talented squad,” Webb said.
“I feel like I’ve put my best work together now and I’m looking forward to showing that on the weekend.”
Fremantle’s AFL Women’s manager Wade Spilcker commended Webb on her switch to becoming a footballer, saying the move showed “incredible character”.
“She now looks like a natural footballer,” Spiclker said.
“It’s something that hasn’t come easy, but she has put the work in.”
Webb transitioned from an athletic runner into a footballer last year after coming down to watch husband and Fremantle assistant coach Mark Webb at training.
The rookie said the infectious atmosphere at training was one of the reasons she decided to become a professional footballer.
“The atmosphere down at training was amazing, I just said ‘I have to get on board this’,” Webb said.
Spilcker described Webb’s story as beyond amazing.
“She saw AFLW season one and she thought it was something she wanted to do, so she went out and joined a club last year and just worked incredibly hard in that short period of time,” Spilcker said.
“She has some natural athletic ability but getting used to kicking, marking and handballing as footy is a tough skill.”
Fremantle take on Collingwood at Optus Stadium on Saturday 10 February at 4.10pm WST.
