In the latest episode of The Purple Patch, Duck & Oz run through the matchups they are looking forward to in Freo’s clash against Carlton at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
The Purple Patch is the official Fremantle podcast that comes out every Friday and previews the game each week.
Hosts Duck and Oz, from The Purple Reign podcast, are two of the club’s biggest fans and provide great insight to each game from a fan perspective.
Griffin Logue v Charlie Curnow
Logue v Curnow is going to be a really key one in this game. Logue is back from injury and played a pretty good game against Port Adelaide in his first game back. He’s about the same size and weight as Curnow, which is important and Logue is a bit of an athletic beast.
Curnow is coming off 7.1 against the Western Bulldogs and he’s kicked 18 goals so far this season, including 10 from two games since David Teague has taken over as coach of the Blues.
While Joel Hamling may also spend time on Curnow, it’s likely Logue will go to him at different times. This would have been the perfect match up for Alex Pearce and Logue has taken on that role since his injury.
This is likely the pivotal match up. Logue would have learnt from last week against Melbourne’s Tom McDonald and he should bounce back on Freo’s home deck.
Andrew Brayshaw v Sam Walsh
We had notes down for a tagger to play on the injured Patrick Cripps but we had to cross that one out! This changes to Brayshaw against Walsh – the two young guns. Brayshaw was the no.2 pick in 2017 and Walsh the no.1 pick in 2018.
After a bit of a slow start this season, Brayshaw has really come into a bit of form, especially with his defensive pressure in the past two games. He’s been elite and his run down tackles provided one of the highlight of Freo’s win against Port Adelaide.Walsh is averaging 24.8 disposals at 70 per cent efficiency and 3.5 clearances as an 18-year-old. It would be great to see those two young guys go head to head, and maybe have Brayshaw run with him a bit and try to negate him. Brayshaw has been playing more of a half-forward role but this could be an opportunity for him to run through the guts.
If Brayshaw can get six to seven tackles, that will go a long way to seeing Freo win the game.

Sam Switkowski v Kade Simpson
Switkowski is essentially the defensive forward and he does a lot of the little things, averaging 4.8 tackles per game and 20 pressure acts. We’d love for him to kick a few more goals, he’s only kicked three so far this season, but his work and shut down ability have been really impressive.
Simpson is probably one of our favourite non-Freo players. He’s played 316 games and reads the ball so well. He’s averaging 18.9 disposals off that half-back flank this season and he really gives Carlton that drive off half-back and sets up the rest of the defence really well.
There’s a good chance Switkowski, or maybe even Darcy Tucker will be called upon to play a bit of a shut down role.
