Lee Spurr says Fremantle’s defenders have been hitting the scoreboard as a result of the side’s pressing tactics.

Paul Duffield kicked 1.1 in the win over Adelaide on Sunday, and even Zac Dawson drifted forward to boot a set-shot major.

Spurr, who had a career-best 32 disposals, also lined up for a set-shot but chose to pass it off.

He credited Freo’s tactics for getting the defender’s on the scoresheet.

“We really try and be a press side and we try and lock it in there,” Spurr said.

“It’s good to look off the line a bit more and kick it to us backs who are flushing. We get a few goals here and there.

“It was good to see Zac Dawson kick a goal and the crowd chanting ‘Dawson’ was pretty entertaining.”

Spurr said he was happy to get his hands on the ball, but he added he was only playing his role matched up against small Crows’ forward Eddie Betts.

“He’s one of those forward who is a real ball player, so he takes you to the ball,” he said.

“I was in and around the contest a bit more and I was lucky enough to get involved.”

Spurr said another pleasing aspect was the way the team stood up after backline star Michael Johnson had to be subbed off with a knee injury.

“We had to shuffle a bit,” he said.

“Garrick (Ibbotson) played a bit taller. ‘Johnno’ is a real general back there for us, so we all stood up in leadership and organisation.

“It was a real back six effort.”

Spurr also lauded the entire team effort against Adelaide, which led by two points at half-time.

“To respond the way we did and work as a team to get the result we did was most pleasing,” he said.

“To improve our footy and go forward like we did in the second half, especially.”
