The Fremantle Football Club is proud to introduce the Arthur Leggett Medal, a new honour to be awarded in the Club’s Annual Len Hall Tribute Games.
The first presentation of this Medal will take place on ground this Friday night following the ANZAC Day match against Adelaide at Optus Stadium.
The Medal pays tribute to the life and service of WWII veteran Arthur Leggett, who died on Sunday 6 April at the age of 106. Arthur was Western Australia’s last surviving WWII prisoner of war and played a significant role in past Len Hall Tribute Games. Arthur will be honoured at a State Funeral on Saturday 10 May 2025.
Selected by a panel of media representatives, the Medal will be awarded to the best-on-ground player from the match, adding a new layer of recognition to one of the Club’s most meaningful traditions.
Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said the Medal is a fitting way to acknowledge Arthur’s deep connection to the Club and the ANZAC legacy.
“Arthur Leggett holds a special place in the heart of the Club, and we’re incredibly proud to introduce this Medal in his honour,” Garlick said.
“It was important to the Club that this recognition be shaped with the guidance and support of the Leggett and Hall families and the wider veteran community.
“We are grateful for their trust and collaboration in bringing this tribute to life.”
In addition to the presentation of the medal post-match, fans are encouraged to remain in their seats at three-quarter-time for a special tribute as the Club reflects on Arthur’s extraordinary service and contribution to the WA community.
Fremantle has also worked with the State Government to contribute funds to the ANZAC Day Trust which distributes grants to WA Ex-Service Organisations, assisting with projects that address veteran homelessness, employment, mental health and well-being.
WA Minister for Veterans Issues Paul Papalia praised the Club’s ongoing commitment to honouring veterans through the Len Hall Tribute game and reflected on the broader significance of ANZAC Day.
“Anzac Day is a chance for all Western Australians to remember those, like Arthur Leggett OAM, who bravely fought for the freedoms that we all enjoy,” Papalia said.
“I’d like to thank the Fremantle Dockers Football Club for throwing their support behind our veterans.”
“The ANZAC spirit shaped our nation and it’s important we all do our part to carry it forward.”
Fremantle will host Adelaide in the 28th annual Len Hall Tribute Game this Friday 25 April (ANZAC Day) at Optus Stadium, 6.10pm WST.
The game was named after Western Australia’s last surviving WWI Gallipoli veteran Len Hall, who passed away in 1999, where it has been a key fixture in Fremantle’s calendar since 1996 and is played on or near ANZAC Day each year.
The last time Fremantle played on ANZAC Day was ten years ago, in 2015 against the Sydney Swans.
