Fremantle co-vice-captain Andrew Brayshaw has revealed the significant factors and family influences he took into consideration before signing his six-year contract extension at Fremantle.
The 25-year-old midfielder said his decision to forgo free agency and become a one-club player is driven by a burning desire to be part of Fremantle's first premiership team.
Brayshaw and his fiancée, Lizzie Stock, carefully considered their future, weighing up the prospect of remaining in WA for at least the next seven years and starting a family in Perth against the pull of their Victorian roots.
"For me it was really just a decision about where I see myself settling down and having kids," Brayshaw explained to Mark Readings and Glen Jakovich on 6PR’s Wide World of Sports on Tuesday night.
"We really had to sit down and think about us both being from Victoria and how we were going to go if we were to have kids over here."
Ultimately, the allure of potential success with Fremantle proved too strong to resist.
"Right at the top of that list was me wanting to be part of that first team that wins a premiership at Freo. At the end of the day that's ultimately what it came down to," Brayshaw revealed.
The midfielder's commitment to the Dockers is testament to the club's faith in him.
"It's not often that players would get offered a deal with that sort of length, so I'm very fortunate that the Club was able to show that faith in me," Brayshaw acknowledged.
"They've seen the body of work that I've done over the last seven years that I've put into the footy Club, so they trust that I'll be able to perform to a really high level over those six years."
Brayshaw's decision-making process involved seeking advice from those closest to him, leaning heavily on his partner Lizzie, ensuring she was comfortable with the long-term commitment to Perth.
"She absolutely loves it here," Brayshaw confirmed.
He also sought counsel from his brother Angus, a one-club player and 2021 Melbourne premiership winner, as well as parents Mark and Deborah who have lived a similar life through Mark’s involvement with football.

“I leant on my brother Angus a lot, seeked a lot of advice from him, he’s obviously a one-club player, premiership player, and now retired but he spoke about when he was coming into free agency and how he went through his process,” Brayshaw said.
“I’ve leaned on my parents also… Dad is obviously a past footballer and mum as a partner of a past footballer and having to travel Australia with him. So I took a lot of things into consideration and leant on all of those mentors in my life.”
As Fremantle continues its quest for that elusive first premiership, Brayshaw's long-term commitment sends a strong message about his vision of the Club's future.
With the talented midfielder locked in until 2031, he now adds to the list of 16 other teammates all committed to the Club until 2027 or beyond.
