Fremantle have made three changes to their team of 21 ahead of their week 3 clash with Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday, headlined by the inclusion of Club debutant Gabby Biedenweg-Webster.
Sarah Verrier has been named at half back, and both Ari Hetherington and Biedenweg-Webster have been named on the interchange bench.
The trio will replace Tunisha Kikoak who has been ruled out of the match with a shoulder concern, while Amy Mulholland (managed) and Jo Cregg (omitted) also come out of the side.
Verrier will play her first game of the season after a minor setback saw her miss week 1 with lower leg soreness, before bouncing back with a strong return in last week’s scrimmage.
The 22-year-old running half back has played 40 games in her career to date as she enters her fifth AFLW season.
Biedenweg-Webster was signed as a replacement player for captain Ange Stannett just under three months ago, and has quickly impressed in both the backline and forward line.
This weekend will mark the utility’s fourth AFLW game in her career, having played three games across two seasons at the Gold Coast Suns.
Hetherington has made impressive strides since her signing as a replacement player last season, working on her craft in the ruck, midfield and forward line.
Standing at 179cm, Hetherington played four games in 2023 and has continued to improve her strength and athleticism to earn her first selection in 2024.
Senior Coach Lisa Webb spoke in her weekly media conference on Thursday morning and said the side had reviewed last week’s 33-point loss to the Crows with learnings they will take into the rest of the season.
“We’re going to get a lot out of that game. To go down (against) a really good team, you learn some pretty harsh lessons, and I think we’ve reviewed strongly,” Webb said.
“We’re all in, we understand what we need to improve on, and I think we’re going to put our best foot forward this week.”
While it will be the first time in the AFLW competition that Fremantle and Port Adelaide come head to head, Webb acknowledged Port’s strengths.
“They’ve got some great talent all over the ground. I know (Julia) Teakle kicked four last week, they’ve got Gemma (Houghton) who we know really well, a really strong midfield and some bouncing backs, so it will be great test for us,” Webb said.
Hayley Miller will captain the side in the absence of Ange Stannett, who will manage her coaching role from the bench.
Makaela Tuhakaraina joins Cregg and Mulholland have been named as the three emergencies for the clash.
Bouncedown is at 2.35pm WST, with the game to be broadcast live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy, as well as streamed live on Kayo Sports.
