Fremantle’s AFLW side have made a strong start ahead of pre-season, securing a 14-point win over the West Coast Eagles at Lathlain Park on Saturday in a pre-pre-season hit out.
Keeping West Coast goalless for the first three quarters, Fremantle came out firing, however, the Eagles kicked three in the final term, closing the gap to 6.4 (40) to 3.8 (26) at full-time.
Fremantle AFLW Senior Coach Lisa Webb said she was excited for the girls to get their hands on the ball and was pleased with the end result.
“It was our first hit-out (in a while), so it was exciting to get out, perfect day for it and we will take some learnings from it,” Webb said.
“For three quarters we did a fairly good job and in that last quarter we probably let it slip a bit, but that’s okay – we’ve obviously got a long way to go before the season starts.”
Skipper Hayley Miller had a notable performance from the midfield to the forward line, kicking three of the six goals for Fremantle.
“It was really pleasing (for Hayley),” Webb said.
“We obviously know she’s really talented but the work she’s been doing on her contest work and her pressure working around the contest has been super, so I’m really proud of what she did today as well.”
Ruck Mim Strom spent time in the forward line, allowing Ari Hetherington to dominate in the ruck and create opportunities up forward.
“I thought Mim was really strong. We played her forward a bit today as well and that gave Ari a really good hit-out inside.
“They both brought their strengths, which was really pleasing to see.
“It’s good to see Mim leading up at the footy. It’s a different thing for her and we obviously want to develop her as a player. Once again, we know she always brings that strong effort and attitude.”
Saturday’s match also saw Laura Pugh move from the backline to the forward line, hitting the scoreboard with two goals.
“She (Laura) kicked two snags and she’s another player we want to add another dimension to and I’m always proud of the way she goes about it,” Webb said.
“If it’s not her leadership, it’s her impact to be able to read the game.”
Webb said Fremantle’s back line were impactful bringing the ball out of defence and were strong in the contest.
“I thought they had some really strong contest (down back) and had some good rebounds out there as well today,” Webb said.
“Madi Scanlon did a great job as well – she’s continuing to grow as a player and learn, and I think today she took another step forward.
Both sides included WAFLW players in their line-ups for the day, with one being Mim Strom’s 20-year-old sister, Indi, who hails from South Fremantle.
“We were really proud of our futures players. I thought they did a sensational job of coming in and filling the void of some of the players that weren’t available today,” Webb said.
“Indi plays a lot like Mim – we saw she doesn’t like to get beaten at contest and she’s good both aerially and on the ground as well.”
Fremantle's AFLW players will return for the commencement of pre-season on Monday 3 June.
