Fremantle have announced that Cooper Simpson will make his AFL debut against the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium for the Club’s Len Hall Tribute Game.
The 19-year-old was Fremantle’s first selection with pick 35 in the 2023 National Draft, and instantly impressed with his professionalism, natural football ability and prowess around goal during his short time at the Club.
Following the announcement to the team, Simpson could not hold back his excitement.
“When I heard the news, I was over the moon. I couldn’t stop smiling,” Simpson said.
“I can’t wait to get out there in front of the home crowd for my first time and just enjoy it.
“I’m super excited to get out there on the big stage against the Doggies in a special game.”
Simpson featured in Peel’s 68-point win over West Coast at last week’s RAC Derby curtain raiser, with the medium forward picking up 19 disposals, five tackles and two goals.
“Everyone has been awesome,” Simpson said.
“Getting guidance and expertise from all the players, staff and coaches has been awesome. They’ve been really good for me.
“Individually I think I showed my strengths and got the call up.”
Simpson impressed from the outset, with the energetic forward to become the first player to play an AFL match in the number 29 since Club legend Matthew Pavlich retired in 2016.
“It is really special,” Simpson said.
“To have someone like him (Matthew Pavlich) as a mentor and in my corner, I’m super grateful for and will cherish.”

Simpson explained the excitement of what the debut news meant to his family in Melbourne, who would be traveling to watch him make his first AFL appearance.
“Mum was very emotional as I expected her to be… dad he was super pumped for me and I was so excited (to tell them),” Simpson said.
“They haven’t missed a game yet. This week was going to be the only game that they were going to miss but I guess they’re coming back now.
“They are super excited to come over again and watch me play”
Fremantle’s final team of 23 players will be announced at 4.20pm WST this afternoon.
