Fremantle’s ruck combination may finally be taking shape with Aaron Sandilands and Jon Griffin seeming to be the perfect pairing.

Griffin played his first AFL match for 2015 against Carlton on Saturday and teamed up well with the four-time All Australian Sandilands.

Fremantle has played Zac Clarke and Jack Hannath through the ruck this season but may have landed its preferred combination.

The pair dominated the hit-outs against last Saturday, recording a combined 66 to Carlton’s 29.

Senior coach Ross Lyon said while he was pleased with Sandilands and Griffin game, there was room to improve.

“We were really pleased but they’ve got plenty of improvement still,” he said.

“It wasn’t perfect.

“They’ll play together this week.”

The pair will face the experienced Richmond tall pair of Shaun Hampson and Ivan Maric at the MCG on Saturday.

Freo wary of Richmond

Lyon admitted the side was trying to reduce its reliance on Sandilands, who is arguably the competition’s best ruckman.

“We’re trying to wean ourselves off having Aaron there all the time, with potential injuries coming,” he said.

Fremantle play Richmond at the MCG on Saturday 25 July. Bounce down is at 4.35pm local time.
