Six students from the Fremantle Dockers Sport, Business and Leadership Program recently toured Bunbury and Busselton for their group project, delivering AFL skills clinics at local primary schools and football clubs.
The students planned a three-day tour through the south teaching AFL fundamentals through football clinics and skills sessions. This project included contacting local schools, developing a budget for the travel and fundraising to cover both the cost of the trip and the supplies required.
The first stop was at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School where approximately 60 students attended a one and half hour session. From there the group went to Bunbury Primary School to engage with a class of 20 students for 50 minutes. Students who participated were able to develop their fundamental AFL skills including handpassing, kicking and ground balls.
After a loss on the weekend, numbers at South Bunbury Football Club were down on the expected 20 females that had signed up for a session. Seven females still attended and took part in a one-hour game of coaches v students.
Unfortunately, day two of the trip did not go to plan with bad weather in Busselton causing the local primary school and Carey Park Football Club to cancel their planned sessions. As the weather fined up, the afternoon session at Carey Primary School allowed everyone to finish the day on a positive note with three classes (around 60 students) getting the opportunity to run through an AFL development session.
On the road back to Perth, the group stopped at Adam Road Primary School where they wrapped up the three-day trip with a one-hour skills session before heading home.
The Fremantle Dockers Football Club are proud to partner with the Purple Hands Foundation and SEDA Group (SEDA) to bring you a one-year dual Diploma program in sport and business.
The program is designed to give students the opportunity to study in a practical, hands-on learning environment, and gain real experience in the sports industry alongside the Fremantle Dockers.
