Nine Fremantle listed players were in action as Peel clinched a third-place finish on the WAFL ladder with a 10-point victory over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.

The Thunder have booked a qualifying final fixture against Subiaco at Leederville Oval on Saturday 2 September as they qualify for finals for a second consecutive season.

Josh Corbett was outstanding up forward with a five-goal haul, while also providing a dominant target in the air taking 12 marks.

Will Brodie (25 disposals, four tackles) looked a class above in the midfield, while Nathan Wilson (19 disposals) was solid off half back and Nathan O’Driscoll (19 disposals, 10 marks) patrolled the wings reliably all afternoon.

Travis Colyer (18 disposals) added speed and pressure to the forward line, and ruckman Max Knobel (one goal, 17 hitouts) made his presence felt in just his second league appearance.

Fremantle's mid-season recruit Ethan Stanley (16 disposals, five tackles) was clean and impactful with his disposals around the ground.

There was unfortunate news for key forward Matt Taberner who exited the game early in the second term with an apparent back injury.

Swan Districts brought the pressure early limiting Peel’s ball movement going forward, with the home side controlling much of the play to take a 15-point lead into the first break.

Brodie and Brady Grey linked up through the midfield to see Corbett take a huge contested grab in Peel's forward 50 and getting the Thunder off the mark early in the second.

Some undisciplined play from the Swans saw Knobel earn a free kick and go back for a monster goal from outside 50.

Off the back of Corbett's three goals for the term, the Thunder went into the main break with an 11-point lead with Brodie on top in the possession count with 14.

Peel's first of the second half came via a handball over the top to Corbett who ran into an open goal square to kick his fourth, while elite forward 50 pressure from Colyer helped set up others on the scoreboard.

Multiple contested efforts from Brodie went unrewarded as Swan Districts lead scoring shots for the quarter, but the Thunder managed to hold on to a 14- point lead heading into the final quarter.

Back-to-back goals from the Swans in the last saw the pressure rise as the home side mounted a late comeback.

A resilient Peel defence managed to hold off the attack to secure a narrow win away from home.

Knobel highlighted his teammates ability to execute the basics against Swan Districts.

“It was a great win, obviously we didn’t start the way we wanted to, but we got back to the basics and played our role," Knobel said.

“We got back to what we know, playing our role and shape and bringing our own brand and that was a real key in getting it back to our way.

“It was a great win away from home."

Knobel credited Corbett’s contested ability up forward and spoke about the cohesion built amongst the group over the season.

“Josh is massive, he’s a great fella and a great player," Knobel said.

"He had a massive presence up forward and we love what he does.

“The connection between Peel and Freo is really good, there is some youth and some really good experience, so it has been great to learn off both.”
