Confidence does not win football games but action does, according to Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon.

Confidence has been the ‘buzz’ word in football this week but what is it?

“Confidence is just a feeling,” Lyon said.

“Confidence is nice to have, but you don’t need it to be successful, not only in football but anything you do.

“We talk about action built confidence, that’s where confidence comes from.

“Why do you feel confident? Because you’ve delivered actions that make you believe you can get something done.”

Lyon wants nostrils to flare

While Fremantle has lost its past two matches, Lyon said the club’s confidence heading into finals was built on its record so far this season of 16 wins and four losses.

“Over a long period of time we find ourselves on top of the ladder,” he said.

“We acknowledge that over the last six weeks, we haven’t hit the 100 point mark, that ‘Holy Grail’.

“Earlier in the year we were (kicking) 100 points.”

Lyon said his ‘confidence’ in the group remained.

“My belief never wavers in this group,” he said.

“We’ve been action based and relentless.”

Lyon said Fremantle would continue its focus on elite defence and providing opportunities to its forwards.
