In the closing stages of Fremantle’s loss to GWS on Saturday, Hayden Young made the move from half back to the centre square as Justin Longmuir gave the 22-year-old his first taste of midfield action.

Young attended four centre bounces in the fourth quarter and won the clearance in the final centre bounce of the game.

Senior Coach Justin Longmuir flagged in an interview on Saturday that both Young and Heath Chapman may ‘move up the ground’ to the wing or midfield in the future.

Fremantle have an abundance of players at half back in the likes of Young, Chapman, Jordan Clark, Brandon Walker and Ethan Hughes.

At Peel, Karl Worner has been putting his hand up for a debut, while Corey Wagner made his debut earlier in the season.

Longmuir was asked on ABC Grandstand if Jordan Clark was a player he would consider for a wing role.

“Probably not (regarding Clark) but we’d consider Chappy on the wing,” Longmuir said.

“Him and Youngy, we think in the future, will work their way up the ground a little bit.

“At the moment, Clarky and Youngy are doing great jobs in their roles for us down back in a pretty well functioning backline.”

Chapman may be used on the wing as early as this year when the 21-year-old returns from a hamstring injury.

“Chappy when he comes back, there’s an opportunity for him to go up the ground a little bit earlier than we anticipated and we can see what he can do as a winger,” Longmuir said.

“He’s a really good runner, a really good ground level player. He can offer really good aerial support on the wing. That’s something we’ll look at when Chappy returns.”

Talking post-game, Clark agreed that Young had what it takes to move into the midfield.

“JL wanted to try a few things and Youngy’s a very good player,” Clark said.

“Moving forward in his career I think he wants to get up around the ball.”
