WAFL Watch - Round 16: Forwards and rucks
Find out how Freo's forwards and rucks fared in the recent round of WAFL action
Jack played ruck and forward. Whilst he dominated the hitouts, he was beaten by his opponent in Christopher Keunen on the day. Jack gave away a number of free kicks but responded well in the second half, where he took three contested marks and positioned better for long, down the line kicks.
Matt Taberner (PT) 7 disposals (5 kicks, 2 handballs) 2 goals
Matt played forward and had a battle in regards to his ability to get free from his opponent and lead to the ball. He kicked a couple of goals and should have given one off to a teammate at one stage. He demonstrated a strong corridor lead in the first quarter that set up a goal. Matt’s football will continue to develop through his diligence and work rate.
Craig Moller (PT) 16 disposals (6 kicks, 10 handballs) 8 marks, 1 goal
Craig played deep forward and ruck in only his second game in 14 weeks. It was a really good all round effort first-up. His hitout effectiveness was good particularly his placement of the ball for the midfielders. He had four contested marks showing good judgement of the ball in flight. Craig's follow up work is a positive of his game and he consistently shows second and third efforts. He is gaining weight and improving his game and shows a really strong inner drive.
Josh Mellington (WP) 15 disposals (11 kicks, 4 handballs) 5 marks
Josh played high forward and mid. He had some good passages of play, one in particular where he hit in hard off the line at a centre square bounce to win the contested ball. In the first quarter he had a nice long 45-metre kick and came back with the flight in the third quarter for a spoil. His game was typified by some isolated efforts and we are looking at building on that.
Lachie Neale (SD) 34 disposals (12 kicks, 22 handballs) 6 marks, 2 goals
Lachie had a very strong performance for Swan Districts. He played as a high forward where he got in off the line and impacted where possible. He was very clean with his hands in close and he released hard to get front and square, which resulted in a nice goal. He ended the game with two goals.
Max Duffy (EF) 7 disposals (5 kicks, 2 handballs) 2 goals
Max started the game well where he started as a high forward and worked up to stoppages and involved himself in the play. He work hard running forward, which resulted in two goals in the first quarter. Unfortunately Max injured himself in the second quarter and was out for the rest of the game. It was positive game for Max in that he showed composure with his running goals and he covered the ground well.
Alex Howson (EF) 7 disposals (5 kicks, 2 handballs) 2 goals
Alex played reserves for East Fremantle on Saturday where he kicked a few goals and there were some examples of chases with intent. He was upgraded to league for the Foxtel Cup on Tuesday night against Werribee at Patersons Stadium where the game was played in torrential rain. He had a couple of good ground balls and took a contested mark. Alex played his role in what were good old-fashioned wet weather conditions in East Fremantle's win over Werribee.
