Lachie Schultz feels having Michael Walters back in the line-up makes him a better player, with the pair growing their chemistry in their fifth season together at the Club.

They contributed seven of Fremantle’s 15 goals in Friday’s win against Gold Coast at Norwood Oval, with Walters kicking four goals in a game for the second time this season.

Not only are they impacting the scoreboard individually, they are also helping each other in the process.

Walters set up both of Schultz’s opening half goals, and in the fourth quarter Schultz returned the favour by shrugging off a tackle and feeding the ball to an open Walters in the goal square.

Walters missed Fremantle’s round one loss to St Kilda and came on the second half against North Melbourne as a substitute, kicking two goals as he inspired a comeback that fell one-point short.

“I love playing with Sonny, we’ve got a really good chemistry and have played a few years together now,” Schultz said.

“To have him back, it makes my life a lot easier.

“We know each other’s games inside out, I loved having him there and the passion that he brings, it’s something that we’ve lacked (early in the season).

“His goal sense is phenomenal and the way he uses his body, his small forward craft is second to none.

“To have him back in our forward line and at his best on the weekend was great to see.”

Schultz said Fremantle played their best football when they are at their most physical, crediting Caleb Serong’s grunt work in the midfield for Freo’s comeback win against the Suns.

“We changed a few things at half time and it was working. The boys in the midfield really stepped up,” Schultz said.

“We won the ball, broke tackles and got it out the front of the stoppage.

“Caleb was exceptional, he really led from the front. Andy (Brayshaw) and Will (Brodie) as well, Sean (Darcy) had a massive game.

“(We had) confidence coming into the last quarter, we knew that we were the fitter side and the stronger side on the day, and we were just going to be able to run over the top.”
