Sell out crowd for 25th Carlton Mid Derby
The 25th Carlton Mid Derby is officially sold out for Fremantle’s home game against West Coast this Saturday night.
Priority periods finished last Tuesday, allowing the remaining tickets to go on sale to the general public on Wednesday and the last tickets were sold over the Easter long weekend.
“This is a great result for the club. With Fremantle’s membership numbers reaching an all time record of over 42,000 members this year and West Coast members getting priority access to purchase tickets ahead of the general public, a sell out was expected,” said General Manager – Commercial Operations Steve Rosich.
Another big game is expected this Saturday to feature the AFL’s Rivalry Round in Western Australia, and it will be broadcast live on Channel 10 from 5:30pm.
The Carlton Mid Derbies are always packed with action and memorable moments.
Last year’s round 6 showdown saw Paul Hasleby goal with 40 seconds to play to give Fremantle a thrilling five-point win. In round 3, 2005, Luke McPharlin soared in defence on the half time siren to take what was the eventual Mark Of The Year.
In the first Carlton Mid Derby of 2001, a typically courageous Shaun McManus ran back to mark only to be crunched by Eagles defender David Wirrpanda. Not only did McManus take a brilliant mark, he kicked an inspirational goal from deep in the forward pocket.
Tony Modra’s 6 goals helped steer Fremantle to their first ever Carlton Mid Derby win in round 16, 1999. A running goal from the boundary with Ashley McIntosh right on his tail was a moment many Fremantle fans will never forget. That, and the mass celebrations around Fremantle later that night!
So, with a full house at Subiaco Oval and a huge home crowd advantage, Fremantle’s pride and passion will be on full display to create an atmosphere to match the home town rivalry for the battle for the Carlton Mid Derby Trophy.
There is no better time to show your colours, pride and passion than in a Carlton Mid Derby.
The second Carlton Mid Derby is the West Coast home game in Round 18 on Sunday 5 August.
The all-time record between the two clubs stands at Fremantle 7 wins, West Coast 17 wins. Since 2002 when the reigns of Chris Connolly began, the record stands at Fremantle 5, West Coast 5. Last year was the first time that Fremantle has won both Carlton Mid Derbies in a season.
Fremantle’s 57 point win in the round 21 encounter last year is the club’s biggest winning margin in a Carlton Mid Derby.
Clive Waterhouse holds the record for the most goals kicked by a Fremantle player in a derby with a seven goal haul in Fremantle’s thrilling one point win in round 21, 2000.
