Fremantle captain Alex Pearce spoke about his perspective around the confusion that surrounded the final moments of Fremantle’s one-point loss to North Melbourne on Saturday at Optus Stadium.

Freo were poised to receive a deliberate out of bounds free kick as the siren went, which would have given Ethan Hughes a chance to at least equalise the scores from a tight angle just inside the 50m arc.

Pearce was on hand to plead Fremantle’s case as the umpiring group deliberated the timing of the siren and the ball going out of bounds.

“I was just trying to, firstly plead for a review, and get their understanding,” Pearce said.

“There was a bit of uncertainty with the umpires and the field umpire made the call that the siren went beforehand.

“They can’t score review (an out of bounds decision). I tried to plead our case but to no avail.”

Pearce agreed that his team shouldn’t rely on 50-50 calls to win a game.

“100 per cent, we had plenty of opportunities out there tonight,” Pearce said.

“It’s disappointing that we didn’t play our best footy for large parts.

“We created a few chances and played with the ball in our front half for periods of the game and couldn’t capitalise.

“We gave away a few easy goals, a lot of their goals were from free kicks or contests that we lost where they got us out the back.

“It’s disappointing.”

Pearce lamented that fellow defender Brennan Cox’s late goal wasn’t a part of what could have been a remarkable comeback.

“It was a good goal and he had another chance at the end there,” Pearce said.

“He got his hands on it in the square really late, if he kicked two in the last five, that would have been something.

“When we’re down late our plan is to get aggressive. We were able to execute that, but it was just too little too late.”
