Ross Lyon believes it’s only a matter of time before expansion club Greater Western Sydney becomes an AFL power.

The young Giants, who are in their second season in the competition under the tutelage of Kevin Sheedy, face Fremantle at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

The club had its first win of the season last weekend with a victory over fellow cellar-dwellers Melbourne.

When asked if he would consider resting players this week, Lyon reminded the media of the immense talent GWS had on its list.

“The first thing is we respect all opponents, and I’ve seen GWS five goals up on Geelong and I’ve seen them really stretch Essendon,” he said.

“You look at their form over the past three or four weeks, it’s probably as good as it’s been bar the Sydney game.

“After a win they’ll be full of confidence.”

Lyon was full of praise for the Giants and said their struggles could be attributed to the high volume of young players.

“What I see is an enormously talented young team, a quick and skilful side that make great decisions,” he said.

“Their ability to endure the demands of an AFL game, because they’re so collectively young, is their only deficiency.

“It’s just a matter of time for them. In two years time, we’re going to be thinking, how did we let this happen?”

The Fremantle senior coach said GWS possessed high quality in the midfield, with co-captain Callan Ward and number one draft pick Tom Scully in good form, and the likes of WA youngster Stephen Coniglio also running through there.

Lyon was also in awe of Giants’ forward star Jeremy Cameron, who kicked seven goals against Collingwood at the MCG recently and is third in the Coleman Medal race.

“The numbers tell you he’s going to be a special player,” he said.

“He’s an enormous athlete.

“If you go back and match him up against the best power forwards of their generation, they delivered probably in stronger teams.

“He’s a freak, plain and simple, he’s a freak.”
