Star Fremantle Dockers recruit Luke Jackson says the Club’s Community Camp in WA’s South West has come at the perfect time to build connections with new teammates.
Fremantle’s first to fourth year players are spending three days based in Dunsborough, visiting schools and lifestyle villages in surrounding towns, plus mingling with locals at training and a sport’s night at the Dunsborough Football Club.
New draftees Corey Wagner, Max Knobel, Tom Emmett and Hugh Davies have also arrived at the team’s base, along with NGA products Conrad Williams and Josh Draper.
Traded to Fremantle after three seasons with Melbourne, Jackson says timing the camp at the end of the first week of pre-season will prove invaluable.
“I’m starting to build good connections with the boys and coaches,” Jackson said.
“It’s really important just to keep building the relationships, keep training and getting sessions in with the boys and getting to know their strengths on the field. It will help along way going forward."
Jackson and Claremont and Christ Church defender Hugh Davies visited three schools on Friday, starting the day helping students at Cape Naturaliste College in Vasse with their football skills.
The co-education public high school has a strong connection to Fremantle with former students including current forward Jye Amiss, inaugural Fremantle AFLW player Tayla Bresland and six-game ruckman Scott Jones.
The road trip concludes with an open training session at Bovell Oval, Busselton on Friday afternoon.
After claiming a flag with the Demons in 2021, the premiership ruck/forward believes the foundations are set for Fremantle to continue to aim for the ultimate success.
“I’m really confident,” Jackson said.
“It’s just a really young core that’s driven for success so I think everyone just really wants to start getting to work and training.
“Hopefully that can lead to more finals and playing in grand finals. I’m really excited for the club going forward to see what we can do.”
