Fremantle are waiting for Chris Mayne to sign a contract at Collingwood as they prepare to use the compensation pick in other negotiations.
Speaking to NAB Trade Radio on Monday, Fremantle’s general manager of list management Brad Lloyd said the club was hopeful of receiving a second round compensation pick.
“He’s uncontracted, so we’ll wait for the paperwork to be lodged (by Collingwood),” he said.
“It’s our understanding he will accept a free-agency opportunity, so we’re just waiting to get any detail on that one.
“It comes down to term and dollars but look, I think around that second round pick would be my understanding.”
Lloyd remains confident small forward Hayden Ballantyne will be at the club in 2017.
“He’s someone we’ve always wanted to retain and someone we’ve always wanted to be playing for Fremantle,” he said.
“Our feeling will be he will remain at the club next year and we would like that to happen.”
Fremantle understands that Michael Barlow may seek to continue his career elsewhere.
Lloyd has spoken with Barlow’s manager Marty Pask with a view to working through the trade period with regards to the 29-year-old’s future and said discussions will remain transparent.
“He’s been a tremendous player for the club and had a good year this year as well,” he said.
“We’re respectful of Michael’s position to potentially look at some opportunities that might come up.
“We haven’t been in a position to offer Michael a contract at this point and obviously as an AFL player that leads you to look around at what other opportunities are available.”
