At 36, David Mundy should be in the twilight of his career, but the veteran is showing no signs of slowing down as Fremantle start to emerge once again as an AFL contender.
Even with a return to finals looming large for the 6-1 Freo Dockers, Senior Coach Justin Longmuir believes Mundy could play well beyond 2022 and has no shortage of motivation as he continues to set the benchmark off the field.
“He's just a true professional, you don't get to this stage and playing at his age without being a true professional,” Longmuir told 3AW.
“The thing that I've noticed about him is he's really still invested in the footy club and his footy. I think sometimes when you get towards the end of your career, you can cut a few corners and don't think you need to do as much or sometimes become less invested in the day to day of the footy club.
“He's fully invested and I wouldn't be surprised if he's got another couple of years left in him.”
Playing on the 17th anniversary of his AFL debut, Mundy was a cool head in the midfield during Fremantle’s epic three-point win against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
The 36-year-old led the team with 11 contested possessions and seven clearances and stood up at the final stoppage as Geelong threatened to steal the game late.
“His efforts in that last 20 seconds to win a couple of contested balls in the middle of the ground and lead us to victory was first class,” Longmuir said.
“I couldn't speak highly enough about him.”
