Jordan Clark is set to start the season in defence with senior coach Justin Longmuir saying the speedy recruit brings a number of traits Fremantle have lacked down back.
The former Cat was flagged for either a half back or wing role when he arrived in the NAB AFL Trade Period, with Clark saying he preferred the half back role.
Longmuir agrees, with the likes of Liam Henry instead set to add depth on the outside.
“We think Jordan gives us a few things we don’t have in our backline, he has that elite speed and he’s also a very good kick,” Longmuir told 6PR.
“Those two things have been on show at training and he’s fit into the group really well.”
As well as pace, Longmuir said Fremantle require elite endurance in the role, and Clark had shown a strong work rate since pre-season started in November.
“He’s an elite runner, we expect a high work rate from our high half backs to be able to get up the ground and defend our front half but also get back and support the deeper defenders,” Longmuir said.
“He’s probably a top three or four in our running at the moment, he’s really hit the ground running in all facets of his footy. It’s been an impressive start from him.”
