Brennan Cox has put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension which will see the defender remain at Fremantle until at least the end of the 2024 season.
Cox has played 59 games in his five seasons and has been a mainstay of Freo’s backline over the past couple of seasons.
The 23-year old defender believes Freo’s young group have the belief to take yet another step forward in 2022.
“It feels really good (to sign on), I’m really excited about the group we have and the way the future is looking,” Cox said.
“We’ve got a really good bunch of boys and I’m excited to grow as a player and get stuck into this season.
“I’m excited by the growth area, we are so young and there’s still not many games played amongst the whole group.”
Cox played 12 games in 2021 before a serious hamstring issue saw him miss the second half of the season.
Sustained in round 12 against the Western Bulldogs, Cox was diligent in his rehabilitation phase and pushed hard for an end of season return, but fell just short.
However, Cox is expected to be available for full training when the five-year-plus players return to pre-season on Monday 6 December.
“It’s obviously not ideal getting the hammy and it’s been a long process to get back to full strength, but I’m there now,” Cox said.
“It’s been a long off season, but the hammy is fully healed and I’m ready to go."
Cox is expected to play a similar role in 2022 in defence after a shift in recent years from a position in Freo’s forward line.
Cox said he is eager to see the fruit of next week’s draft haul and welcome some fresh faces to the Club.
“I’ve spoken to ‘Boydy’ (assistant coach Matthew Boyd) and he’s said that I’ll be a defender,” Cox said.
“But, if a tall forward goes down I might have to swing forward and kick a few goals, however, at this stage I’m a defender.
“It’s always good getting some new boys in (via the draft), as long as they don’t draft anymore defenders because I don’t want to be put out of a spot!
“It’ll be exciting to see some fresh faces and see who we draft, so I’ll be watching it keenly.”
