Fremantle are looking to select up to six players during Tuesday’s NAB AFLW National Draft with senior coach Trent Cooper excited about what the next crop will bring to the Club’s AFLW list.

Freo take picks 14, 31, 38, 44, 52 and 57 into the draft and can draft any player that has nominated for the WA pool.

Fremantle are set to see significant list turnover after delisting Katie-Jayne Grieve, Alex Williams, Tarnee Tester and Jess Trend following the season, while trading Evie Gooch to West Coast for the sixth pick in the WA pool.

Forward Ashley Sharp will also not take part in the upcoming season due to pregnancy while Sabreena Duffy was moved to the inactive list.

Cooper said the acquisition of the sixth pick in WA will be key due to the depth of the WA talent pool.

“Initially when the draft order came out we only had two out of the top seven picks in WA due to West Coast’s priority picks,” Cooper said.

“We think there is some talent in the WA Draft pool, so we were able to trade our way in, now having three of the top six picks in the draft.

“It’s a bit cliché, but we are looking to secure the best available talent in those early picks, but maybe with our later picks we will be looking for some list balance, depending on what we pick up earlier in the draft.

“This draft group performed really well as a group in the state under 19s, particularly in Victoria against the Allies and Vic Metro, so we will be looking to add quite a few players who played in those (U19 Championships) games.”

Cooper said the coaching staff and playing group were excited to see what the new players will bring to the Club.

“It’s quite a big turnover, last time we had this amount of turnover we really benefited from it and produced our best season to date,” Cooper said.

“You find that new people coming into the program are really keen to impress and really willing to work hard, it also brings a level of excitement to the existing group, so we are hoping we can add six players who will add a lot to our program.”

The draft will take place in a virtual format on Tuesday, July 27 at 4.45pm WST. All the action will be streamed through womens.afl and the AFLW Official App.
