After five years out of finals, Fremantle’s revamped list is starting to show promise and, according to Fox Footy hosts Gerard Whateley and Mark Robinson, this Thursday night’s clash against Geelong is the Club’s chance to make a statement to the competition.

Freo currently sit seventh on the ladder but will be made to earn any place in the finals with a run home against the Cats, Sydney, Richmond, Brisbane, West Coast and St Kilda.

Speaking on AFL360, Whateley said Fremantle have a big opportunity taking on the third-placed Geelong.

“Possession is nine tenths of the law, and this week, they hold it,” Whateley said.

“I think the one-tenth here (is) they've got a really hard round coming in. They've got wins against GWS, Hawthorn, Adelaide, North Melbourne, Gold Coast and Collingwood. They have that win against (top-eight team) Sydney.

“What they did to Hawthorn - march into Launceston and they just dismembered them. So we're looking for the proof of progress, which hasn't been there yet against the contending teams.

“(Taking on Geelong), it's the right matchup at the right time.”

Robinson agreed about the high-stakes nature of the game.

"It is going to flip the season on its head if they get up and win," he said.

Robinson added Sean Darcy was quickly becoming the best ruck in the competition at just 23 years of age.

“I've watched the last eight games of the Fremantle Dockers and Sean Darcy, I think he is the form ruckman of the competition.

“I'm not disrespecting, Max (Gawn), (Brodie) Grundy or Nicnat (Nic Naitanui), he is one of the best ruckmen in the competition.”

Caleb Serong also impressed against Hawthorn, being allowed to run freely after playing as a tagger for most of the season.

Serong’s 10 clearances was the second-most by a Fremantle player aged 20 or under, trailing Paul Hasleby’s 11 against West Coast in 2001.

“It was really interesting - Serong, who's a tagger, he's a single digit draftee,” Robinson said.

“They didn't tag and he has 30 (disposals) and 10 clearances.

“They’re coming together. But they just need that big scalp.”

The game will be celebrated as the Starlight Purple Haze Game, presented by South32 - where Fremantle will be raising money to help support seriously ill children and their families.
