Senior coach Justin Longmuir has backed David Mundy to follow in the footsteps of Shaun Burgoyne and become the sixth AFL player to reach the 400-game milestone.
The 35-year-old is having what is arguably his finest AFL season and speaking on Fox Footy's AFL 360, Longmuir backed the Freo veteran to significantly add to his 347-game career to date.
Asked if Mundy could be a 400-game player, Longmuir said: “He could be, yeah.
“You don’t lose your skill, or you don’t lose your game sense, that actually grows as you get older. The thing that drives these players is the motivation to put in the work continuously for 15, 16 or 20 years in Shaun Burgoyne’s case. That’s still there with Dave.
“He’s really driven to be a better footballer, a better leader, he’s really invested in the group of young mids he’s playing with at the moment. So as long as that’s there, I can’t see him retiring any time soon.”
Mundy is out of contract at the end of the season and Longmuir said the Club would engage with Mundy soon about extending for a 19th year at Freo.
“I think negotiations are going to start soon. He definitely deserves to go around again in my eyes; the motivation’s still there from his side, so I don’t see why not,” Longmuir said.
“I just love having him around the Club. He’s a great leader, a great role model for our young players. Even if he’s not playing, just having him around the club is a benefit, so it’s win-win all around.”
