After showing some impressive fight Fremantle were unable to capitalise and hold on in a 16-point loss to Carlton at the MCG on Saturday night, according to midfielder James Aish.
Fremantle were almost five goals down early in the second term before turning it around to level the scores at three quarter time.
A behind to start the fourth from Lachie Schultz had Freo take the lead, but a goalless final quarter saw Carlton sail home.
Aish said Freo were unable to stay level-headed once the game was there for the taking.
“Giving up a lead against a team that likes momentum like that. It’s really disappointing,” Aish said.
“(Accuracy) hurt us. It certainly doesn’t help. We were on top for large parts of the game there, but we weren’t able to capitalise and get a lead. It’s disappointing and we need to work on that.
“With a bit of a crowd here as well. It can be difficult. It was good to come back and put us in a position to win the game. We just weren’t quite good enough.
"We have to be more consistent and calm when teams get a lead especially.
"We’re just trying to improve and be more consistent. Do the little things well and that should hold us in good stead."
Aish praised 21-year-old Andrew Brayshaw, who bounced back from a quiet performance against the Blues in round three to have 28 disposals and kick two goals.
“Andy was massive,” Aish said.
“I think they put a bit of work into him and he was able to work through that.
“He’s just turning into a really good midfielder at this level and he works really hard. He’s going to be a great player.”
Aish said a turbulent week didn’t affect Freo, but the team was disappointed not to secure a morale-boosting win on the road in what was meant to be a home game at Optus Stadium.
“It was a really big week,” Aish said.
“I think we did settle in pretty well to Melbourne and our prep was really good. We did everything we could to be ready for the game.
“It would have been great to cap it off. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with the game next week against Hawthorn and get the win then.”
