The 7-7 Fremantle Dockers are ‘flying under the radar’ according to the hosts of Fox Footy’s First Crack Podcastin Leigh Montagna, Ben Dixon and David King.
The three have been impressed with how Fremantle have fared this season considering the impact that injuries have had on their young list.
Freo’s round 15 team was the second-least experienced in the AFL for the round, and they’ve still managed to win 50 per cent of their games without much consistency in their starting line-up.
King highlighted that Fremantle have had just five players play in every game this season, the lowest in the AFL and more than half that of Melbourne and Brisbane (12), while Sydney, Essendon, Adelaide and North Melbourne have all had 10 players feature in every game.

Melbourne | 12 |

“It’s been musical chairs over there. When you look at the health of the team…have a look at who’s played all games. I think this is a really good guide to how stable you are at selection,” King said.
“Usually, it’s a reflection of the ladder. (First-placed) Melbourne have had 12 players who have played every game, (second-placed) Western Bulldogs Dogs nine, (third-placed) Brisbane 12. You’d expect them to be around the mark. (Sixth-placed) Sydney’s had 10. They’re pretty settled.
“You go down to Fremantle, and they’re just outside of the eight at the moment and they’ve had five players play all games.
“Caleb Serong, Travis Colyer, James Aish, Blake Acres and David Mundy. They’ve only had three miss one game in Sean Darcy, Lachie Schultz and Andrew Brayshaw.”
King said it was a credit to Justin Longmuir for ensuring Fremantle were able to consistently compete.
“They’ve had to recompile their whole 22 week on week,” King said.
“I think it’s a fantastic attribute of your coach, to be able to get this sort of performance out of a different team every week.”
Montagna added that he expects Fremantle to take the next step when they improve their accuracy in front of goal. Freo rank 18th scoring accuracy but turned it around by kicking 14.7 (91) against Collingwood.
“Freo have been doing a lot right for the majority of the year,” Montagna said
“Their game is in pretty good shape, early in the year, they just missed a lot of opportunities in front of goal and they squandered opportunities in their forward 50.
“That sort of efficiency has been a part of their game that’s really cost them. Their midfield is rock solid, Mundy is having an unbelievable year but (Adam) Cerra, Brayshaw and Serong are all wonderful.
“Their defence is getting better as they’re getting players back and they’re being more potent in the front half. They’re doing a lot right and they should be really pleased with where they’re sitting at the moment.”
Dixon said it was an impressive road win for Fremantle against a Collingwood team with a new coach that had just defeated ladder-leaders Melbourne.
“They’re flying under the radar a little bit Fremantle,” Dixon said.
“When you’re up against a first-time coach in Robert Harvey, you’re not sure about their style of play and they could do anything, like they showed against Melbourne, but what an outstanding effort to get over the line.”
More votes for Mundy!
