A chat with Freo captain, Matthew Pavlich set the tone for how Max Duffy has gone about his first year on an AFL list.

The small forward was taken at pick 36 in the 2012 National Draft and within his first month at the club he sought out Pavlich to speak to him about life as an elite athlete.

“Earlier in the year we talked about what he aims for and what he thinks are the most important things about being an AFL footballer,” Duffy said.

“He spoke to me about how he goes about things, what you need to focus on while you’re at the club.

“I took a lot from that chat, it makes you start to realise that the main message is that you need to make the most out of every minute that you’re at the club.”

Duffy has had a couple of stints on the sidelines this season due to a hamstring injury.

But he has managed to see the positive side of rehab.

“I’ve had about eight weeks out with two hamstring injuries and that’s been a bit frustrating,” he said.

“Obviously you come in wanting to play every game and impress.

“There’s been a few setbacks, but that's okay, you learn things in rehab, you learn to work harder and you work on your weaknesses, it's not all bad.

“If you speak to Kepler Bradley and guys like that, I think their experience in rehab would be a bit more frustrating.

“It’s a day-in, day-out job and while you enjoy it as much as you can it can be quite tough at times but you just need to make sure you get the most out if it while you have the opportunity.”

As with most first year players Duffy’s aim at the start of the season was to put on condition.

The time he’s spent in rehab has helped him round his body out, adding eight kilos to his frame.

“I’ve gotten stronger in all areas, and while I've had time out of running, I've been able to put on a bit of size and upper body strength, so that’s been good,” Duffy said.

Duffy has a clear focus for the end part of the WAFL season.

With East Fremantle sitting in third place on the WAFL ladder, he is keen to get back out on the oval and show why he was drafted.

“I'm just hoping to finish off the year really strongly, my body is really ready to go, I've been running well, my legs and hammys feel good,” he said.

“I'm ready to get the games under my belt and start to put some good performances together.”
