Versatile wing-man James Aish is prepared to step up in the midfield if needed with captain Nat Fyfe set to miss next week’s clash against Carlton at Marvel Stadium.
Starting on the wing in Freo’s 31-point win against GWS at Optus Stadium on Sunday, Aish moved into the middle after Fyfe came off in the third term with concussion.
The AFL’s new 12-day concussion rule means Fyfe will miss at least one game as he recovers from the head knock.
“We’ll see how he (Fyfe) pulls up but I think we’ve got a pretty good midfield mix which we’ve had most of the summer and the pre-season games as well,” Aish said.
“It’s how we operate that we can all play wing, half forward and, hopefully, I can jump in there a bit more and we put in another performance like we did today.”
'Those young guys are dominating at the moment' | James Aish
James Aish caught up with us after his 100th match to talk about today's win and the positivity coming from the group.
It was a day of celebration for Aish, as he played his 100th game in Freo’s dominant performance.
“A win always makes it (the milestone celebration) better,” Aish said.
“It was a really good game, we worked on a lot of the things last week and came out and did pretty well, so it was really good for Chappy (Heath Chapman) for his first game and Meeky (Lloyd Meek) for his first win as well… those are special moments.”
The South Australian has travelled the country on his way to 100 games, playing for Brisbane and at Collingwood during Justin Longmuir’s tenure there as assistant coach.
Aish said it was special to have Longmuir present him with his jumper pre-game.
“I’m convinced your next 100 will be even better”

“It was pretty cool. It’s been a bit of a strange journey, he’s a big reason why I’m here now so it was good for him to present and for my family to be able to fly over was pretty special,” Aish said.
“I guess you can reflect on it a little bit as time goes on but it’s a special moment.
“Hopefully (my next 100 games) are a bit quicker than it took to get to this 100, but it was really nice...there’s some really good times ahead at Freo.”
