Kara Donnellan will captain Fremantle’s women’s side for a second year after being voted in by her peers.
Donnellan was Freo’s inaugural women’s captain in 2017 and will continue to lead the group with Kiara Bowers and Amy Lavell also being named vice-captains.
The midfielder believes the playing group are desperate to grow and improve in 2018.
“There was a lot of unknowns in the first year for the players, clubs and even the AFLW,” Donnellan said.
“We’re just really driven and motivated for success in 2018 and that excitement within the group is contagious.”
Donnellan captained Swan Districts to back-to-back premierships in the WAWFL in 2016 and 2017 and says the leadership within the playing group is strong, especially in her deputies.
“Even before we came back to pre-season the girls really bought into what the club wanted to achieve,” the 25-year old said.
“They did a lot of work to prepare for this pre-season and we’re reaping the benefits.
“We have a united group and I can’t wait to run out and lead with Amy and Kiara in 2018.”
Donnellan credits a brutal pre-season camp in November as a driving force behind the strong bond within the group.
“A lot of girls impressed me during the camp,” Donnellan said.
“We were pushed to our limits and we had a new found respect for each other at the end of it.
With 48 days until round one the Fremantle captain remains focussed on the Western Bulldogs, however admits the first home game in round two at Perth Stadium will be something special.
“The atmosphere will be unbelievable, it’s going to be a massive one,” Donnellan said.
“To get all the supporters and fans there, not only Fremantle supporters but female footy supporters, it’s going to be a massive showcase and I can’t wait to lead the girls out.”
