As just one member of a star-studded forward line, Gabby O’Sullivan was happy to take a backseat and watch her teammates shine in Fremantle’s 30-point win against GWS at Fremantle Oval on Sunday.
 
O’Sullivan was a key contributor with 13 disposals, five tackles and three marks against the Giants, but her fellow forwards Gemma Houghton, Sabreena Duffy and debutant Mikayla Hyde stole the show.
 
Houghton and Duffy kicked three goals each and Houghton was particularly dominant with 20 disposals and nine marks in what was arguably a career-best performance.
 
“Sometimes I want to get the popcorn out and watch them do their thing,” O’Sullivan said.
 
“What’s great is that their goals come from a great team effort. It’s a special combination down there.
 
“Gemma’s magic. She keeps improving each and every year. She’s so athletic and such a dangerous player that teams have to be careful of her. If they do guard her well, then we’ve got other girls that will pop up.
 
“Sabreena could play blindfolded and still find the goals. I’ve nicknamed her Ron after Ron Weasley because she’s a wizard. If that doesn’t say anything, nothing will.”

Hyde was already the feel-good story of the round after she found herself debuting just 10 days after being added to Fremantle’s list as a top-up player.
 
The 19-year-old didn’t look out of place at the top level and finished off a great piece of play that started with O’Sullivan and involved a fellow debutant in Sarah Verrier.
 
“I remember jumping over someone and handing to (Verrier) who quickly flung it to Mikayla,” O’Sullivan said.
 
“I knew she was going to kick the goal because I could see her having that space and I got excited before she even kicked it, so I’m glad she slotted it.
 
“It was amazing. She’s worked so hard to get to this spot. She hasn’t just been given it, she’s worked really hard and she fits in well with the team. I can’t wait to see her play in the future.”
