It was almost like a second debut as Tiah Haynes made her return to the AFLW after two years away from the top level, helping Freo to a 30-point win against GWS at Fremantle Oval on Sunday.
Haynes played in Fremantle’s first two seasons in the AFLW but missed the next two after being delisted at the end of the 2018 season as she battled a shoulder injury.
The midfielder had 12 disposals and four tackles against the Giants and was overjoyed to play in her second win from her seven career games to date.
“It pretty exciting being back at Fremantle. I was honoured and privileged to play in front of our home crowd and I was pumped to be back out there and get a win,” Haynes said.
“From the first training session I came back, it felt like I never really left. The girls have been fantastic and the support they’ve given me has been huge. To be back around the girls that we have is awesome.”
Haynes said it was a tough road back to Fremantle after being delisted in 2018. She then continued to train with the club as a part of the Female Academy.
“I had a shoulder injury the second year and came back, was delisted after that and had a knee injury in the academy while trying to get myself back on the list,” Haynes said.
“I fought pretty hard to get myself back, especially in the WAFLW season last year playing for Subi. I managed to get myself back on the list and get a game today, which was really nice.”
Haynes’ return to AFLW level capped off a big week where she was married last Saturday to her now wife Jaki.
“It has been a pretty big week. To get on the park as well and get a win just tops it all off,” Haynes said.
“The support that I’ve had has been massive so it’s been a really exciting journey for us.”
